Terminology

Philately (Philatélie): is the study of stamps and postal history and other related items. It refers to the collection and research activities on stamps and other philatelic products.

Postal history (Histoire postale): is the study of postal systems and how they operate and the study of the use of postage stamps and covers and associated postal artifacts in the development of postal systems.

Deltiology (Cartophilie): is the study and collection of postcards.

Marcophily (Marcophilie): is the specialised study and collection of postmarks, cancellations and postal markings applied by hand or machine on mail.
